Celtic Twilight I - CD
(John plays "Farewell"). John Doan leads off the first of these highly successful samplers of new sounds in Celtic inspired music. An international hit, it topped Billboard's charts for a year and has since sold over 500,000 copies. Sharing in this ground breaking recording are such artists as Loreena McKennitt, Alasdair Fraser, Joanie Madden, Davy Spillane, Nightnoise, among others. John got his inspiration for this piece while playing bedside for American folk legend Burl Ives. They had talked about the tradition of bards and how Burl had identified with his Irish roots and had even modeled his singing after John McCormick who was a famous Irish tenor. He spoke of how he saw his role as reminding people of their roots so that they would have a better idea of who they are now so that they can better walk proudly into their future. He was in the later stages of leukemia and had to remain lying for great periods of time. As John played on into the evening Burl drifted to sleep listening to this improvised tribute to America's last great bard.
Celtic Twilight II - CD
(John plays "The Journey Home"). This sequel to the hit compilation Celtic Twilight matched and may have surpassed its model. John is again joined by such artists as Loreena McKennitt, Joanie Madden as well as others such as Nightnoise. This recording was special to John as he shares the album with Micheal O'Domhnaill (Nightnoise) who introduced him to Billy Oskay who has produced and recorded most of John's recordings. Kate and Ilene O'Moore (Micheal's Aunties) introduced John to Micheal as a result of an unplanned meeting where John was a guest in their bed and breakfast in Lahinch, Ireland, where they danced a jig and prayed a prayer over John and sent him off to play a practical joke on their "bad" nephew who had not come to visit them in a long time.
Celtic Twilight IV - CD
(John plays "Where Horses of Faery Hide"). Celtic Music ‘Round the World is the theme for Celtic Planet featuring artists from Spain, Norway, England, Ireland, the U.S. etc.
Celtic Twilight V - CD
(John plays "St. Patrick In The Spirit" and The Lamentation of Turlough O'Carolan"). The finale to the series with U.S. debut of Irish singer Meav - former principal soloist with Anuna, Riverdance, and the Irish National Orchestra.
Shanachie Records Sampler:
Songs From The Hills - CD
(John plays "The Water is Wide" with orchestra). This is a collection of instrumental Impressions of Appalachian Classics featuring a veritable "Who's Who" of traditional American music. John's stand out rendition of "The Water is Wide" was produced by Brian Keane and is reason enough for acquiring this recording. Other artists include Jay Ungar, Bill Keith, Norman Blake, John Sebastian, among others.
